JPG (or JPEG) is the most widely used image format in the world, used by almost every digital camera and smartphone. It applies lossy compression: the higher the chosen quality, the more detail is preserved at the cost of a larger file, and vice versa.
Its main strength is universal compatibility: every browser, operating system, printer and editing software opens it without issue. However, it does not support transparency — worth keeping in mind if you're converting a PNG or WEBP with a transparent background.
Specific converters
When JPG is the right choice — and when it isn't
Convert to JPG when compatibility matters more than anything else: a document being sent to a print shop, a photo attached to an administrative form, an upload field that rejects newer formats, or an archive that has to stay readable on old software. JPG is the one raster format you can assume will open anywhere.
It is the wrong choice in three cases. If the image has a transparent background, JPG will flatten it to white — keep PNG or WebP instead. If it is flat artwork with sharp edges, such as a logo or a UI screenshot, JPG's lossy compression smears the edges and often produces a larger file than PNG would. And if the image is destined for a website you control, WebP or AVIF will give you the same visual result at a noticeably smaller size.
One practical detail worth knowing: JPG is lossy every time it is saved. Re-encoding an image that has already been through JPG compression degrades it a little further, so work from the original file whenever you still have it.
Choosing a quality level
The quality setting decides how aggressively detail is discarded. The relationship is not linear: the first drop from maximum quality removes a great deal of weight for almost no visible change, while the last few points cost far more than they save.

If you are working to a fixed ceiling rather than a look, set a target size in MB or KB instead and let the encoder find the quality that fits.
